Clifton Branch Library Project
front view of Parkview Manor In the spring of 2010, Michael L. Dever was asked by Library Trustee Bill Moran to donate the 1895 former home of George “Boss” Cox to the Library for a new Clifton Branch Library. On May 27th, Mr. Dever generously gifted the Library ownership of “Parkview Manor,” located at 3400 Brookline Avenue in Clifton, with the stipulation that it house the relocated Clifton Branch Library. Clifton area residents are very heavy users of their branch and growing demand for library services is far exceeding the capacity of the current facility. To better serve the community, the Library has been searching for a new location for a larger branch in Clifton for more than 30 years but finding an appropriate site has been difficult. This building (nearly four times larger than the current storefront facility) would allow creation of a dedicated children’s room, teen area, program space, expanded collection, meeting rooms, and a computer lab. Visit the Library’s website for more information about this exciting project.
Harry Potter Celebration!
Melissa Anelli holding Harry, a History Meet Harry Potter Historian Melissa Anelli!
Melissa Anelli‘s hobby of blogging for The Leaky Cauldron quickly opened the way for her new adventure: expert historian of the Harry Potter Phenomenon. Anelli‘s book Harry, a History: The True Story of a Boy Wizard, His Fans, and Life Inside the Harry Potter Phenomenon has quickly become an indispensable necessity for all Harry Potter enthusiasts. Melissa Anelli will speak at the Main Library‘s Reading Garden Lounge on July 31st at 2:00 p.m. and a book signing will follow.

Handmade Books Spotlighted
Handmade Book In today‘s world of ebooks and instant messaging, there are still artists, graphic designers, printmakers, and fine binders using traditional craftsmanship to create unique and small edition books. Two special exhibits now at the Main Library showcase handmade volumes. On view in the atrium through September 7th is Bookworks 11, the eleventh annual display of book art created by members of the Cincinnati Book Arts Society. The Keith Kuhn Memorial Artists‘ Book Exhibit - Marking Time, in the Cincinnati Room from July 5th through August 26th, is a traveling exhibit of book art created by members of the Guild of Bookworkers who were asked to interpret the theme of “marking time” in any way that they wished. Marking Time is co-sponsored by the Cincinnati Book Arts Society.
Computer Equipment Expanded with Gates Grant
Patrons at computer workstations Receipt of a $161,852 Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Opportunity Online Hardware Grant provided much-needed funds to upgrade and purchase additional computer equipment for 17 of the Library‘s 40 branches. Gates grants were designed to help libraries enhance and add public computer workstations for customers in communities with high concentrations of poverty and where a library‘s computers are at risk of becoming outdated with limited capacity for users.
Patrons at computer workstations The grant-funded computers offer several new features including sound, video, USB ports, and Microsoft Office 2007 software (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). There are also scanners and a touch screen print release station, as well as the ability to print in color. For locations and further information about the Gates Grant-funded equipment, please visit the Library‘s website.
Book Clubs to Go—BC2G
Paul Burch and Sherry Frey at BC2G Book clubs will find all of the essentials for a thoughtful and hearty book discussion with Book Club to Go (BC2G), a new service from the Library. Each thick-strapped, canvas bag includes 15 copies of the same title, a book summary and review, the author‘s biography and list of published titles, discussion questions, suggestions for further reading, and a customizable poster to display at the Library or wherever the book club meets. Visit the Library‘s website for more information about this new free service and a list of some the 20 titles that are now available to check out from your local branch library.
Zoo Tales
Children's Librarian reading in front of an elephant at the Zoo Lions and tigers and books, oh my. Throughout July, the Library is partnering with the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden to present Zoo Tales. Every Tuesday in July a children‘s librarian will visit the Zoo and do a storytime focused on a popular character from children‘s literature. At the end of each program, the character will make a guest appearance. Zoo Tales begins on July 6th and runs weekly through July 27th. Storytimes are free with Zoo admission. In exchange, the Zoo will bring their “Wildlife Comes to You” program to four branch libraries (Bond Hill, Wyoming, West End and Madeira) during the summer. These free programs feature a Zoo educator and four Zoo animal ambassadors.
