Meet Dr. Irene M. Pepperberg, the author of Alex & Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Uncovered
a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence—and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process,
the 2011 selection for the On the Same Page community-wide reading program. She will be speaking at
the Main Library in the Reading Garden Lounge on Saturday, March 5, 2:00 p.m. A book
signing will follow her talk. Be sure to come early to meet parrots from the
Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, who will be on hand from 1:30-2:00 p.m. Visit the

Pet Day!

Bring your pet to the Main Library Reading Garden on Sunday, March 20 at 2:00 p.m. for an
afternoon of fun activities about animals. Find out what your pet is really thinking by meeting
with an animal communicator and learn about keeping your pet healthy, happy, and safe. (Pets must
be leashed or caged at all times.)
Pet Cam: Share your pet's tricks! In the spirit of Alex & Me, we’ve also launched
a Pet Cam on our YouTube Channel. Check it out!
And, if you’d like to submit your own entry, send your video file (.mov or .wmv) to us.
We’ll add it to the line-up!

Mobile Website Now Live
|
Have a mobile device? Try out our new mobile site, designed to make the library website a more
satisfying experience for our customers with smartphones and other mobile devices! This site,
m.cincinnatilibrary.org, is easy to use. It was designed for viewing on the small
screens of mobile devices and provides access to the resources and services most useful
to on-the-go Library users. You can search a mobile-optimized version of the catalog,
work with your account to place holds, renew items checked out, review items on hold, and
view fines & fees, as well as find branch locations and hours, and download ebooks.

iPAD APP AVAILABLE FOR LIBRARY’S EBOOKS

Have you been anxiously waiting for the chance to download the Library’s free ebooks to your iPad?
We’ve got some great news—the OverDrive Media Console app, which is optimized for iPads,
has just been released! Use the app to download thousands of bestselling ebooks and audiobooks
from the Ohio eBook Project collection to your iPad. The free app is available in the
App Store, and can be installed on Apple devices running iOS v4.0 (or newer).

St. Patrick's Day Celebrations
|
|
Everyone is Irish at least one day a year. Wear green and join us during your lunch hour on
Thursday, March 17 in the Main Library atrium for lively performances by the McGing
Irish Dancers and the musical duo Foley Road. The 29th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration
of Song & Dance, sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library, starts at 11:45 a.m.
The McGing Irish Dancers will also be performing at six branch libraries and additional
programs celebrating Irish culture will be hosted at various Library locations during March.

Meet Bestselling Author Jeff Shaara
|
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, author Jeff Shaara will discuss his
bestselling war novels in the Main Library on Saturday, April 2 at 2:00 p.m. His remarks, followed
by a book signing, will take place in the Reading Garden Lounge on the first floor. His work
includes Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure, the prequel and sequel to his Pulitzer
Prize-winning father’s famous Civil War novel The Killer Angels. This free program is sponsored
by the Friends of the Public Library and the Library Programs Fund.
For those who would like a more personal experience with the author, the Library Foundation is
hosting a special fundraising reception with Jeff Shaara at noon, prior to his public talk. Tickets
are $100 and include lunch, a meet & greet with the author, priority seating for the lecture, and
an autographed copy of Gods and Generals. Reservations are limited. For more information, go to

Share Your Treasures Winners
|
Visit the Virtual Library to see the four winners from the second
Share Your Treasures Digitization Contest.
Sixty-seven entries were submitted, from which we selected 10 finalists for the public to cast
its votes. The winning items are the travel diaries of noted Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford,
the Civil War diaries of Silas Patten, and a 1788 Miami land warrant signed by John Cleves Symmes
conveying property to Benjamin Stiles, one of the original founders of Cincinnati. There are also
91 love letters written between September 1932 and October 1934 from Mrs. Ida Bilby, who lived in
a log cabin outside of Batavia, to Mr. Jacob Rich, who lived on a farm near Goshen.

Circus & Theater Posters On View
|
Visit the Cincinnati Room to discover the creative genius of one of America’s most famous printing
companies. In conjunction with the Cincinnati Art Museum exhibit, “The Amazing American Circus Poster,”
the Main Library will display late 19th and early 20th century circus and theater posters from its
extensive collection of prints by the Cincinnati-based Strobridge Lithographing Company. These
vividly colored posters helped define a period in our City’s history when it was the center of
production for outdoor commercial advertising. The exhibit will be on view March 7-May 28.
