The Birds of Bethlehem

Tomie dePaola

This bird’s-eye view of the Nativity provides a new look at the Christmas story. Pairs of colorful birds gather and recount the unusual sights in Bethlehem: long lines of visitors, no vacancy at the Inn, a man and his wife led to the stable. Other birds see an angel announcing the birth of a special baby and heavenly hosts singing “Glory to God.” The birds all fly to the stable and behold a spectacular sight: “a young mother, her husband and their newborn baby.” Simple colorful shapes and spare text combine to make a touching and unique version of the story – perfect for reading aloud.
