A Trick of the Light
In her first novel since Missing Girls (1999), Metzger tells the story of a rarely recognized segment of eating disorder sufferers, young men. Fifteen-year-old Mike Welles had everything under control. But now his parents separate, his life falls apart and he feels like a mess. Mike hears a voice in his head that urges him to exercise and to subsist on next to nothing. He drops weight, isolates himself, and yearns to be thinner, which he equates with true strength. After a stay in the hospital, therapy, and sustained support from his friends, Mike begins first to question the voice, and to find the strength to take a stance against it.
