DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop
Laban Carrick Hill

Clive Campbell was born in Jamaica where he fell in love with music. When his family moved to the Bronx he became Kool Herc, an innovative DJ who put the same record on two turntables to extend the break in a song. Break dancers and rappers joined his parties and Hip Hop was born: "Even street gangs wanted to dance, not fight." The rhythm of the text makes this story a captivating read-aloud for young children as Taylor's meticulous ink washes are expressive and precise. An energetic and accessible picture book biography from the author of Dave, the Potter (2010) Ages 6-9
