Gabrielle Zevin

A cantankerous widower becomes an unexpected father in Zevin's (The Hole We're In, 2010) funny and sad latest novel. A.J. Fikry owns Island Books, the only bookstore on Massachusetts' Alice Island. Despondent over the death of his wife and the likely demise of his bookstore, A.J. has grown increasingly short-tempered. Then one day he discovers a toddler in his store with a note pinned to her Elmo doll: "This is Maya. She is twenty-five months old." So begins the transformation of both bookstore and owner. A thoroughly charming read.
