Eighty Days:Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History-Making Race Around the World

Matthew Goodman

Most everyone has heard of Nellie Bly, the female journalist from Pulitzer's World newspaper who set out to test, and hopefully best, Jules Verne's notion of traveling around the world in 80 days. What many people don't know is that the publisher of the magazine The Cosmopolitan sent one of his writers, a young woman named Elizabeth Bisland, off the same day to break the same record. Nellie boarded a steamboat and headed across the Atlantic while Elizabeth took a steam locomotive westward to the Pacific. And the rest, as they say, is history.
