Out of the Easy
Sepetys follows her debut, Between Shades of Gray (2011), with another historical novel, this one set in the French Quarter of New Orleans in 1950. Since the age of 12, 17-year-old Josie Moraine has made her way in the world, working in a local bookstore in exchange for a safe place to sleep and earning money toward her planned escape. She’ll try anything to get away from her mother, a prostitute with a knack for getting involved with the worst men. Josie devises a plan, but her mother strikes again, putting her in the middle of a murder investigation and saddling her daughter with a huge debt.
