And We Stay

Jenny Hubbard

Hubbard's second book (Paper Covers Rock, 2011) is a powerful look at the aftermath of suicide. When 17-year-old Emily Beam breaks up with her boyfriend, he walks into the school library with a stolen gun, threatens her, and then takes his own life. Shattered, Emily is sent away to the Amherst School for Girls which is in the hometown of Emily's idol, the poet, Emily Dickinson. Grieving and guilty, Emily discovers that writing poetry helps her express her feelings. With the help of a ghostly presence, and the support of two quirky friends, she is finally able to find the strength to heal.
