Piecing Me Together

Renée Watson

Watson (This Side of Home, 2015) tells a powerful story that challenges stereotypes of class, race, and social dynamics. Jade Butler is an African-American “at risk student” from a poor neighborhood in Portland, OR where she and her mother struggle to make ends meet. She takes advantage of every opportunity that comes her way including a scholarship to a mostly white private school. But these opportunities are often more demeaning than helpful. Like an invitation to join a mentorship program that makes Jade feel like a charity case. She believes there are things she could show these successful women, including her sponsor Maxine, about finding ways to make a real difference in the world.
