Zoboi’s powerful and sharp debut is based on the author’s experience as a young Haitian immigrant in the 1980’s. Although she was born in America, Fabiola Toussaint has lived in Haiti since she was an infant and dreams of a better life with her aunt and cousins in Detroit. But upon arriving in New York City, her mother is detained by U.S. immigration forcing Fabiola to continue on to Detroit alone. Unprepared for life in America, she’s shocked by the violence and crime in her new neighborhood which is every bit as dangerous as the one she left behind. Just as Fabiola begins to find her way in this strange new world, a dangerous proposition presents itself.
