Moriarty’s young adult debut is set in a near-future America where registries and detainment camps for Muslim Americans is a reality. After being abandoned by their mother, Sarah Mary Williams, 15, and her younger brother Caleb are stuck living in rural Missouri with their strict aunt. Although she has always had strong opinions, Sarah isn’t concerned with the containment rules because she doesn’t know any Muslims. Her indifference changes when Caleb is helped by Sadaf, an Iranian who is determined to reach freedom in Canada. Initially, Sarah believes she must turn the woman in, but soon finds herself reconsidering her assumptions and decides to help Sadaf escape. The two set off on a dangerous journey, hitchhiking their way through the heart of America, discovering courage and kindness in the most unexpected places.
