My Name Is Victoria
Historian Lucy Worsley's (Maid of the King’s Court, 2017) second YA novel puts an interesting twist on Queen Victoria's childhood and path to the throne. She's seen through the eyes of Miss Victoria Conroy, the shy daughter of Sir John Conroy, confidant and financial adviser to Princes Victoria’s mother. At the age of 11, Miss V is sent to be the companion of the young Princess Victoria. Although she does her best to remain in the shadows, soon the two girls develop a deep friendship. Claiming he wants to keep the Princess safe, Sir John devises an oppressive system to keep the future Queen from having contact with the outside world. Miss V becomes suspicious of the strict set of rules and wonders if her father is trying to protect the Princess or using the system to feed his own hunger for power.
