Learning to Breathe
Set on an island in the Bahamas, Mather’s heartbreaking debut revolves around 16-year-old Indira Ferguson. Despite the fact that she’s always been a good, rule-abiding girl, Indy’s often compared to her mother Shariece, a promiscuous drug addict. The people in her small village assumed she'd follow in her mother's footsteps and gave Indy the nickname Doubles. Her grandmother sees trouble ahead and sends her to live with distant relatives in Nassau. But once there, she's viewed as a problem which leaves Indy feeling trapped and hopeless. Then one day she stumbles upon a yoga retreat which points her in a new direction. Here Indy discovers friends who accept and empower her to find her voice and to make her own decisions.
