In Maas's strong debut novel, 18-year-old Celaena Sardothien is considered the best assassin in Adarlan and she has been condemned to the salt mines for her work. After serving out a year, she is brought before Prince Dorian who offers Celaena her freedom on the condition that she act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Although she's bored by court life, things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her, but it's her trainer, the gruff Captain Westfall, who seems to understand her best. When the contestants begin showing up dead Celaena must figure out who the killer is before she becomes the next victim.
