The Impossible Rescue:The True Story of An Amazing Arctic Adventure

Martin Sandler

An early winter with bone-chilling storms caused eight American whaling ships to be caught in the ice off the coast of Alaska. The year was 1897 and 300 sailors were trapped in the ships with limited food and little hope for survival. President McKinley sent three men to save the sailors – they had to trek over 1500 miles of brutal terrain, secure herds of reindeer for food, and survive in the Arctic winter. With the help of journal entries and photographs historian Martin Sandler recreated the riveting journey and dramatic rescue. Ages 10-13
