Mom & Me & Mom

Maya Angelou

After her marriage ended, Maya Angelou's mother, Vivian Baxter, sent 3-year-old Maya and her older brother, Bailey, to Stamps, Arkansas to live with their paternal grandmother, as recounted in her acclaimed autobiography, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings (1969). The feelings of abandonment stayed with Angelou for years, but their reunion when Maya was a teenager began a journey of love and reconciliation with the mother she once preferred to simply call, “Lady.”
