Something to Prove:The Great Satchel Paige Vs. Rookie Joe DiMaggio

Robert Skead

In 1936 Satchel Paige was a world-class pitcher in the Negro Leagues. Joe DiMaggio was a twenty-one-year-old prospect under consideration by the New York Yankees. As a test, a game was arranged between the Satchel Paige All-Stars and the Dick Bartell’s All-Stars (including DiMaggio). Satchel Paige “threw fire” with his windmill wind-up and a wide variety of pitches. The game went into extra innings and DiMaggio was offered a spot on the Yankees roster; Satchel Paige had to wait 12 years before joining the majors. Cooper’s soft dramatic illustrations enhance this true story of two baseball greats who eventually made it into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ages 7-10
