Reality Boy

A. S. King

King (Ask the Passengers 2012) presents a nuanced portrayal of 16-year-old Gerald Faust who has not lived down the notoriety he achieved at age 5. During his family’s stint on Network Nanny, a "reality" television show, Gerald defecated on the kitchen table. He was targeted as the problem child when it was actually his psychopathic sister, Tasha, who was the true menace. The horror and injustice of it all follows insecure and angry Gerald into his teens. He finds solace in the fantasy world he calls Gersday and struggles to trust Hannah, a girl from another dysfunctional family who eventually helps him out of his angry shell.
