Shared Thoughts on Leadership

Customers who visited our 41 locations had the opportunity to consider the questions raised by Doris Kearns Goodwin in her seventh book, Leadership in Turbulent Times, and write down their thoughts for others to view. View select responses below then add your ideas to the comments section of this blog post.

How are you leading in these turbulent times?

“I am doing my part by being a kind human. Treating everyone how I want to be treated.”

How can a leader infuse a sense of purpose and meaning into people’s lives?

“By being willing to pivot goals as circumstances change.”

Do leaders shape the times, or do the times summon their leaders?

“Both. The times definitely summon a leader at times (think Malcolm X, MLK Jr.). But leaders definitely shape the times, for better or worse, as well.”

“The times shape the leader. WWII and the pandemic are great examples.”

“I believe the times summon their leaders because the world is always changing with the needs of our society.”

What does it mean to be a leader?

“Putting the interests of those you’re leading ahead of your own.”

“To live your thoughts and beliefs in word and action.”

“It means to help people in the community.”

“A leader sees and offers opportunity, has the management skills to support, guide, and motivate others. A leader seeks improvement, is transparent, and is at the service of the group, team or community, not the other way around.”
