Harrison Branch plans its Vietnam War veteran’s commemoration ceremony

HARRISON, Ohio — The community will honor Vietnam War veterans and their families during a special ceremony ahead of Memorial Day.

The Harrison Branch of the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, in conjunction with the Military Officers Association of America, or MOAA – the nation’s largest military official’s organization based in Alexandria, Va., will recognize Vietnam veterans 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 25 at the branch, 10398 New Haven Road, Harrison, Ohio, 45030.

Service members from all military branches who served in Vietnam – or their families – who registered in advance will be specially recognized and receive a commemorative medal from the organization. The MOAA’s Greater Cincinnati Chapter is coordinating this event.

“My uncle was injured in Vietnam. He lost an eye to a grenade. I grew up knowing the sacrifice he made for our country and the sacrifices made by all our veterans,” Michelle Elliott, the Harrison Branch’s senior branch manager said. “I want to give our local veterans a chance to be recognized for their service and to let the community know who these special people are – or were. We cannot forget.”

MOAA requires veteran pre-registration, which ended April 22. This allows the organization to verify service. This is the first time the Harrison Branch has participated in the MOAA commemoration, Elliott said.

“We are looking forward to giving these veterans the recognition they deserve, especially during this season of remembrance for the sacrifices made by so many,” Elliott said. “The entire community is invited to the Library to show their support as well.”
