Library adds more Treehouse seats with Johnson Foundation grant

The wait just got a little shorter for cardholders who want to learn to code, create an app or how to design a web page. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from The Johnson Foundation, the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County purchased 50 additional licenses for cardholders to use Treehouse for free.

Treehouse is an online technology school that offers beginner to advanced courses in web design, web development, mobile development and game development taught by a team of expert teachers. Its courses are aimed at beginners looking to learn skills for a career in the tech industry. Courses are self-paced and last for six weeks.

“I am continually delighted by both the quality and variety of services our Library provides to its cardholders,” said Amy Goodwin, president and CEO of The Johnson Foundation. “From workforce development, to MakerSpace, to tax assistance, a Library card is about so much more than books. It is about community, opportunity and inclusion.”

Currently, the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is the only library in the state of Ohio to offer Treehouse to its customers. Since the Library unveiled the service in April of 2017, more than 1,100 cardholders have taken Treehouse courses. With the 50 additional Treehouse licenses, the Library now offers 150 seats for customers to learn new tech skills that are in high demand.

ABOUT THE JOHNSON FOUNDATION

Established in 2008, the mission of The Johnson Foundation is to support and strengthen Cincinnati’s urban core through thoughtful grantmaking. The Foundation is committed to programs dedicated to equity and inclusion.  The Foundation was an early supporter of the Treehouse program—and its success—stepping in to provide funds for extra seats within the first few months of the program.  This year, the Foundation once again stepped-in to provide more seats, given the popularity of the program and the free access to skill-building resources that can be life-changing for those in our community.
